USA Run Out of Luck?

In the group stage, the USA performed incredibly, beating Mexico and nearly mounting a comeback against Spain. They were proving that you don't need big stars to win games and be a big team. They had all D2 players on their team except for 2 players on their roster, and the two players weren't even big names; it was Philip & Jrok. Sadly, in the quarter finals, they lost to Germany badly, 7-3 was the score line. Jrok scored a hat-trick to try to give them hope, but it wasn't enough to bring them back into the game. Mbappe, before the match, in an interview, said, "Icey is scary to face. I don't know if the USA's defense has what it takes to stop him from scoring." Was the USA really just lucky? Or was it because of something else?
